2 Letters: WASILLAAAAAAAA & November 3

10 November 2014

I love this area.  I take probably 45 pictures a day and its still not enough.  (could i have a new SD card parents?  THANKS!!!)

I saw a moose this week in a lady's yard! she tossed a pumpkin to it.  Betcha didn't know that moose love pumpkins huh?  well they do.  thats the kind of thing that is commonplace knowledge up here.. also that we lose 7 minutes of daylight a day and alakans know a lot about freezing point and solar flares.  Pretty neat.  OK GET THIS. while we're talking about "only in alaska"

The other day we take a new convert who wants to go on a mission tracting to get her a feeling for it.  we go up to these people's door and its kinda the fancy glass kind. I see a ten year old boy come peek through.  He all of a sudden throws upen the door and RUNS INSIDE and out comes barreling and spit flying a MASTIFF which goes rushing to attack my companion and the other girl both of whom claim they may not have had the best control of their bowels at the time.  I was out of the line of fire but was frozen with the thought:  "really?  really/???? only in alaska!!!!!!! only in alaska would you let out your dog without saying a word and just hope we leave!!!" well.... we didn't... and a moment later a very awkward woman comes and snaps at the mastiff who is suddenly our best friend.  (i have know doubt that "sick em!" would have been entirely effective) she awkwardly told us to leave.  the VERY NEXT house we walk to, get about 20 feet away, and see a man inside with a pitbull shaking his head slowly and dragging his hand across his throat in the "do you want to die?"  movement.  we didn't.  so we left.

the same day, my companion slammed on the breaks while we were driving and all of a sudden felt like we needed to visit some people.  when we arrived a woman stuck her neck out and whispered: "sisters!!! youre inspired!!!! the jehovah's witnesses are here!!!" and dragged us inside.  one looked like he wanted to dig a pit and bury himself and the other thought "we can take these ladies" but on the whole it was a pleasant exchange for a long time while we learned about paganism and all from the recent convert.  I live in alaska folks.  This is my life.

But... through all the crazy times the most exciting part of being a missionary is the word of god.  I am in love with the life of christ, and this week especially the stories of the apostles and how they came to follow christ.  its  awonderful tale.  i just adore it.  the gospel is so riiiich and juicy.  take this verse for example!! "if thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light."  (luke11:36)  how delicious is that??? i could go on, but as you prepare to feast this thanksgiving season, try the virtue of the word of god!!!! I promise it willfill you:)

Love always

Hi Laurel’s Friends and Family,

She sent no group letter, but here are some good details she sent the family:

WASILLA/PALMER:  GORGEOUS!!!! holy.  cow.  my goodness.  They sit at the base of ten or so GIANT MOUNTAINs.  like.... patagonia sized.  They are so impressive and i can't even take their size.  They change appearance and coloring everytime i see them.  i am in love with them. I picked one to be my sweetheart mountian and named him Terry.  Sister Dill picked one and named him Jeremiah.  We obsess over our "Mountain men" haha.  Oh man how i love the area.  I fell more in love with it in about three days than i did in fairbanks for like three months.  The people are just so much more open and warm here.  I didn't realize how closed off people in fairbanks were until i transfered.  I actually switched Sister Dill's old companion and she is now serving in fairbanks 5th ward.  They called me last night for some info and it made me so happy to talk about my old area but i was relieved to feel that my stewardship really had changed.  I love this place so much.  THe beauty alone is KILLER and this is at such a blegh time of year too!  heavens.  THe work is a little slow, but the members here are READY the bishop is incredibly missionary focused. We only have one investigator and she is almost done with the lessons and is going to get baptized!  I don't feel like i have much of a hand in it but its very exciting anyway!

well thats a little bit for you. its super windy here and i live in the cutest ever cabin and we sleep in a loft. I am in love with it.

I love sister dill. She is super fun and SO LOVING and supportive ….  I miss sister faupula though.  she finished her mission and is home!!! craziness.  YES the mountains are gorgeous here.  GOSH i love them.  as for the city... what city?  there really isn't any sort of city center as far as i have seen.  Maybe there is but if there is its scarce.  The views from essentially everyone's house is to die for.  Good fishing?  dunno.  but from the looks of everyones walls its good hunting haha my new mission president is great.  I really love him.  He is very to the white handbook and doesn't make many exceptions which is good but can be hard.  But it really is good. He is quietish....and i love him.  You can telll that he is one of those people that is without guile....He has a heart of gold and lots of enthusiasm and i know for sure he knows me by name and has his eye on me (and everyone else) which is a remarkable feat in and of itself. He is funky haha.

I did fly from FBX to anc.  i sat next to a woman who had utah valley spiked hair, who was really excited to go drink at her country concert that she was flying down for.  She was so worldly but as we talked she really opened up and i dunno... i just loved this woman.  She told me sincerely that i was an incredible person and I told her likewise. I hope that when she gets stripped of her wealth in the next life i can teach her because she has such potential.  Gosh i just love everyone i lay my eyes on.

the missionaries here are....super friendly.  i love it and we dont live with other sisters.
